Love of the Week -Ahhhh Sleep!

I have a confession to make. I use to hate sleep. I thought it was a colossal waste of time. There was always so much to do, and sleep was not one of them. I blame law school. While in law school fulltime, I worked three jobs. In addition to that, I needed to keep my B average. One can not do this while sleeping! I averaged 4 hours a night. It became a habit. Then I turned 40.

40 happens to be when I started running. What began as me wanting to lose a few pounds became much, much more. I fell in love with running and wanted to make sure I was always feeling my best. To accomplish this, I learned sleep was so important. I made an effort to get at least 6 hours but aimed for 7 hours of sleep a night. It was working well. Fast forward to last summer. I was now 47 and started to experience changes in my sleep. I had some trouble falling asleep. The quality of sleep was not great. I was not able to fall into that deep sleep that is important.

During one of my runs, I was listening to a podcast. The hosts, both women, were talking about sleep and what has helped them. One of the products was Nuun Rest.

Nuun Rest is part of the Nuun family of productsNuun is a hydrating beverage without all the extra additives and sugars. It’s product offerings originally were for sports hydration, but have expanded to everyday hydration. Nuun Rest is a blend of magnesium, potassium, and tart-cherry. Tart cherry has shown to reduce muscle soreness and improve sleep quality. It increases the level of melatonin and helps improve the quality of sleep and duration. Magnesium has shown to relax the body and to aid with sleep. Since I started drinking Nuun Rest, my time in deep sleep has increased. I feel more rested in the morning. According to one study, we need between anywhere between 1.5 to 1.8 hours of deep sleep a night. This is roughly 20% of our overall sleep. Like the other Nuun products, Nuun Rest is vegan, kosher, non-GMO, and gluten-free. It comes in Blackberry Vanilla and Lemon Chamomille. I love the Blackberry Vanilla. One tablet of Nuun Rest has ten calories and 1 gram of sugar. Mix it with 8 ounces of water and you are good to go.

I have been taking Nuun Rest every night for the last six months. I am hitting my deep sleep target about 99% of the time. It has been a game-changer for me. For those of you wondering, I am still not a fan of sleep, but we have agreed to co-exist. 🙂

Sleep and I also have a love/hate relationship. I am still discovering how to get my best sleep. I may need to try this.

    • Heather | 30th Jan 20

Give it a try. It can’t hurt.

I love sleep! It makes such a difference in my day. I get what you say about it seems a waste of time when there is so much to do, but I find if I sleep better I can do more with my active hours. I definitely have nights where sleep is elusive, though. I am going to look into this Nuun stuff!

Getting enough sleep is essential to my productivity, my mood, but most importantly sometimes, others experience of me. Talk about grumpy if I don’t get my sleep!

    • Heather | 30th Jan 20

Yes, I definitely feel better, so I am making a conscious effort to sleep more.

Two things I just have to say – I LOVE that you started running at 40. I started running in my 30s and never imagined I would run ever as I hated it in high school. Secondly – Nuun. I just can’t get into it. I don’t sleep well that often to begin with because of my lower back issues and my refusal to take medication I average 11%. Every time I have tried Nuun, I taste electrolytes (like in Gatorade) and it is overpowering. Does the sleep version have an electrolyte taste as well? The Blackberry Vanilla sounds amazing.

    • Heather | 30th Jan 20

Hello fellow runner. I hate Gatorade and any of those other drinks. As long as I have a flavor I like, the Nuun tastes fine to me. The Blackberry Vanilla is my favorite.

Your welcome. Let me know what you think.

I turned 30 last year. I have never thought about how my sleep will change as I grow older 😳 I don’t always get enough sleep and would hate to think I may need it to function later.

    • Heather | 30th Jan 20

Oh yes… hate to break it to you, but you will. LOL.

  7. jen | 20th Jan 20

oh this is great. I need to look into this for my young athlete! Thank you!

  8. Lucy | 20th Jan 20

Lol! I love sleep, I just don’t seem to be getting enough of it lately 😩

    • Heather | 30th Jan 20

I found that as long as the quality is good, you can get by with a little less, at least for a while.

  9. Brianna | 20th Jan 20

I will have to try this for sure! I think it’s awesome that you run! I am inspired!

  10. Lora Rovegna | 20th Jan 20

Okay, how did you work 3 jobs while in law school? I went to law school as well and no way I could have worked even one unless it was during the summer. It’s amazing how much changes when you turn 40. That was when my sleep changed. I can fall asleep just fine but I wake up throughout the night for no reason. My only wish is to sleep 7 hours straight.

    • Heather | 30th Jan 20

I gave up sleep. LOL! I had to pay for it somehow. I have always been someone that needs to be busy every second of every day. It is not something I would do now, but it was worth it. We live a nice life.

  11. Lisa | 20th Jan 20

We may need to try this. I love sleep but it doesn’t always love me.

    • Heather | 30th Jan 20

Give a try. I love it.

  12. Maria G | 20th Jan 20

As someone that has struggled with sleep for about 30 years, it’s a beautiful thing in my world! I love sleep!

    • Heather | 30th Jan 20

Yay! I hope your struggles are under control.

  13. Lisa Manderino | 20th Jan 20

Law school will do it to you! My husband didn’t sleep very much either when we was in law school or now for that matter he sometimes works till 2-3 in the morning (from home)! Attorney life is hard! Sleep is a good thing!

    • Heather | 30th Jan 20

I have gotten to the point in my career, where I try to not let work be the cause of my lack of sleep. It is not worth it!

  14. Allison | 20th Jan 20

I have always loved sleep. I feel so much better when I get the sleep that my body needs. That being said, now that I’m a mom with little kids, I rarely get the good night’s rest that I crave, but I definitely don’t have any trouble getting to sleep, lol!

    • Heather | 30th Jan 20

Kids cause all sorts of trouble, don’t they. LOL.

  15. Eva | 20th Jan 20

Oooooo, I’m going to try this! I know I need more magnesium and I know how important Tart Cherry is to the body. Thank you for sharing this, Heather!

  16. Leslie W. | 20th Jan 20

I may need to show this to my husband…

    • Heather | 30th Jan 20

Please do. I would love to hear what he thinks.

  17. Sydney Delong | 20th Jan 20

I love sleep! Im a new mom and that first month made me realize how much I took sleep for granted LOL! This is an interesting product!

    • Heather | 30th Jan 20

      Congrats! Enjoy your little one.

  18. Tricia Snow | 20th Jan 20

Sleep is so important for our bodies to heal and reset! I am glad you are on board now!

    • Heather | 30th Jan 20

Thanks! It is a struggle for me to comply. 🙂

  19. Jennifer | 20th Jan 20

I started sleeping with a salt lamp not that long ago to control the asthma.

  20. Suzan | 21st Jan 20

I’ve always been a sleeper, needing 8-10 hours. Let’s just say I go to bed early and rise really early 🙂

    • Heather | 30th Jan 20

Wow, I may get 10 hours od sleep if I am sick. That is fantastic!

  21. Rachel | 21st Jan 20

It’s so awesome that you got into running! What a great sport to keep you healthy. And this sounds like a great product.

    • Heather | 30th Jan 20

Thanks! It is one of my favorite things to do now.

  22. Elizabeth | 21st Jan 20

This looks like a great product! I didn’t realize how much I loved sleep until I starting having babies. Sleep deprivation is so hard to manage. I’m glad you’re getting more sleep!

    • Heather | 30th Jan 20

It is so detrimental to our health for sure.

  23. Robin | 21st Jan 20

Wow! I have always loved sleep! 8 hours is a must, or I will nap!

    • Heather | 30th Jan 20

I may sleep 8 hours every couple of months. LOL!

  24. Tara Hallie | 21st Jan 20

I love to sleep (at night, I’m not a napper at all) however I’ve noticed as I’ve aged, it’s gotten tougher to get restorative rest. My husband suffers from insomnia so I’m happy to have read this post. I’ll be buying some of this product stat!

    • Heather | 30th Jan 20

Awesome! Let me know what you think.

  25. Trisha | 21st Jan 20

I am a morning person so it is easy for me to wake up at 4am, way before my kids. Then on the other hand I realize that some days I need to sleep in because my body needs rest. I’ll have to look into this product. Thanks for sharing!

    • Heather | 30th Jan 20

Your welcome. Let me know what you think.
