5 Tips for Traveling to Disney with Kids

Last month, my the boys and I went to Disney World for 10 days. The purpose of the trip was two-fold, vacation and to attend the Princess Half Marathon weekend. By no means was this our first trip to the World. The boys have been going since they were toddlers. Admittedly, not all trips are like what Disney portrays in their commercials. Kids get grumpy and tired. The crowds are huge. They may not have a reaction we expect or want when seeing a character for the first time. The list goes on. However, over the years I have learned to adjust, make some changes to how we approach the parks, where we stay and how much to push my kids. This trip I put what I have learned into action and both kids said this was our best Disney trip yet.

  • Involve them in the planning. Ask them where they want to eat, what Fast Passes they want, what parks they would like to spend the most time in, etc.
Crystal Palace was on their list for breakfast
  • Stay at a hotel that is a good fit for your family. I have teenagers and we need to spread out a bit. We tend to stay at the deluxe resorts, in the DVC sections, as the rooms are bigger. If your kids love a swimming pool, stay at the hotel that was an awesome pool and pool activities.

  • Think outside of the box and take advantage of some of special events Disney has to offer. Attend Early Morning Magic at one of the parks and enjoy having the rides to yourself. We did this for Toy Story land and the kids really enjoyed themselves without having to wait 4 hours for one ride. Book a dessert party at one of the parks. Not only do you get tasty desserts, but a fantastic spot to watch the fireworks. Star Wars was our favorite dessert party.

  • Know how far to push them. I love getting our picture taken with the characters. However, the boys have very little patience for standing in a long line for this. My solution, characters meals! This way I get all my photos and the boys are not waiting in a line. This often made them more accepting when I did want to wait in a line for a certain character, say like, Scrooge McDuck!

  • Build in some downtime. There were a couple of days that we did not go into a park. We hung out by the pool, relaxed in our room, and spent some time at Disney Springs. We usually are in the parks from morning to night. This was a nice change.

I hope these tips are helpful. As I mentioned, we have gone many, many times and each time I learn something new that will help improve our next trip. If you have some tips to share, please do so in the comments. I would love to hear them.

These are great tips. It does make a huge difference when kids are part of the planning decision-making. I tend to pack as much in as possible so scheduling some downtime is a great idea!

Me too and I have paid for that with cranky children. LOL!!

We’ve never done a dessert party as a family. I went to one once as part of a wedding at Disney. (BEST wedding EVER!) I love your tip about doing character meals instead of waiting in lines. The only time we wait in lines to see a character is if the line is super short OR we use a FastPass.

Love it! We love taking the kids to Disney World. They’re getting older now and are like yours and don’t want to wait in line for characters. We take full advantage of the early morning hours and the late hours…because crowds are so much lighter.

    • Heather | 11th Aug 19

Yes and the early morning and late hours are key!

You do Disney a lot like we do. We like to stay in Bay Lake Tower and take breaks. We also love our down time away from the parks. It makes Disney all the more enjoyable!

    • Heather | 11th Aug 19

Absolutely. We have yet to stay at Bay Lake. Our home resort is the Poly and lately, my kids have wanted to stay at the Beach Club. I like the location of both so we can easily go back and hang at the hotel. It makes a big difference.

These are great tips and once that would have been nice had I ever traveled to Disney when my son was younger. When we went as a family he was 19, which was just as fun.

    • Heather | 11th Aug 19

Every age is fun! I love how my boys can go on the rides without me. There are certain ones I will not do, but yet they can enjoy to their heart’s content.

We loved the Character meals with our kids too. Two birds with one stone!

    • Heather | 11th Aug 19

Yes! Though Disney is making them so damn expensive, I don’t know how large families do it.

  7. Shannon | 8th Aug 19

Wish we would have had some of the tips when I took my family recently. Next time I’ll look this up!

I think involving the kids is a great idea. They have skin in the game and therefore better involvement and attitude LOL

    • Heather | 11th Aug 19

Exactly!!! The attitudes can send mama over the edge. πŸ™‚

Very good tips! Always nice to include everyone in the planning so everyone sees what they want to see! I can’t wait to visit Disney world one day.

When you do, please feel free to reach out. We have been so many times and go a few times a year. We have a pretty good grasp on it. I am happy to answer any questions.

Great tips! We’ve been taking our kids to Disney since they were babies, and even now as teens they still love the parks – I think growing up with it makes it feel like “home” to them!

    • Heather | 11th Aug 19

Absolutely! My kids have also grown up there. Sometimes it is taken from granted and they get a big kick in the butt, but for the most part, they know how blessed they are.

  12. Lori Nielsen | 8th Aug 19

I love that you involved them in the planning! It makes the trip smoother when you are not forcing them to do a certain thing!

    • Heather | 11th Aug 19

Yes, and it was a lesson I had to learn. We had one trip that was less than stellar. We learned from our mistakes.

  13. Missy | 9th Aug 19

I enjoy learning tips about Disney. Thank you.

  14. Jen | 9th Aug 19

I like that you built In downtime. Disney and the crowds can be pretty overwhelming.

    • Heather | 11th Aug 19

Absolutely and no need for miserable kids or mama!

  15. Leeanne | 9th Aug 19

I have never heard of a dessert party. This is new to me but I love the idea. We have done a character dinner though when the girls were little and it was great. Disney also really went all out with my daughter’s special food needs. It was really great.

    • Heather | 11th Aug 19

The dessert parties are fairly new. I would say over the last ten years or so. We enjoy them mostly for the guaranteed, fantastic view of the nighly fireworks and shows.

  16. Hera | 9th Aug 19

Downtown is critical on vacations and easily forgotten. I hate rushing from one thing to the next, I’d rather take my time enjoying it energized. Especially Disney World, fighting crowds and the heat can be exhausting.

    • Heather | 11th Aug 19

The heat is what kills me. I can put blinders on and ignore the crowds most of the time. I love just stopping, having a nice cold drink and people watching.

  17. Julie Gazdecki | 10th Aug 19

Know how far to push them, is the best tip!! I see too many families overdue their kids.

    • Heather | 11th Aug 19

Exactly! My boys did better when they were little. We seem to need more breaks now. LOL

  18. Shirley | 11th Aug 19

Great tips!! I’m about ready to take my almost 5 year old granddaughter to Disney so bookmarking for future reference.

I love that you say kids get grumpy and tired because I totally do too at disney so these are just good tips in general !

These are great tips. We always plan rest days in between park days. I have three under seven and we’re still morning until night people at the parks. I am a die hard Disney person but even I need some downtime from the parks. Breaking up park days with resort/pool days helps us all unwind and get ready for another full day at the parks.
