Summer Bucket List Ideas for Teens.

Ahhh.. we had our first real taste of summer this weekend. I am so excited for the season. The days are longer, our schedules are relaxed and we live life at a different pace. The kids are out of school in a few short weeks and it is time for me to create my summer bucket list.

When my boys were small, I had an endless list of things I wanted to accomplish over the summer. It would include play dates at the playground, a day at a spray park, the children’s museum, etc. Now that R&N are 18 and 14, it gets a bit harder to come up with something that we would all enjoy. It is not impossible, but it takes a bit more planning and in some cases more money. Below are some ideas I have planned for my boys and I would love to hear your own ideas.

  • Hit the beach! We get up early, spend most of the day at the beach, have a yummy dinner, and hit an ice cream shop on our way home.
  • Try a different ice cream shop each week. We love ice cream, and though we have our favorites, we want to explore and see what else is out there.
  • Attend a professional sporting event, like a baseball game or soccer match. I see a visit to Fenway Park in the future.
  • Be a tourist in your own capital city. This summer we plan on walking the Freedom Trail with the boys. We also want to check out the new wax museum and a few new restaurants that have opened up in town.
  • Go for a hike.
  • Have a family movie night outside. Rent a projector, set up a white sheet as a screen, make some popcorn and you are good to go.
  • Attend a firework show. Every July 3rd, my family gathers at Gillette Stadium for the local fireworks put on by the Kraft family. Harvard Pilgrim puts on a 5 and 10k race, Finish at the 50, on the same night. I run the race, my family cheers me on and then we stay to watch the fireworks. We set up a picnic, meet friends, and ring in the 4th a day early.
  • Visit an amusement or water park.
  • Buy a metal detector and go hunting. My son received one as a birthday gift and we plan to use it this summer.
  • Volunteer. This summer I am looking for someplace to take my boys to volunteer for the day.
  • Take a road trip.
  • Get a job. This applies to my 17-year-old, but with college around the corner, it is a good one.
  • S’mores over a firepit.
  • Spend time with extended family, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
  • Go to the drive-in movies.

These are just some of the ideas I have jotted down. Ultimately, each summer the list gets a bit longer and we never accomplish it all. However, as I look at it, we are never bored.

Tune in next week when I share what it is on my personal summer bucket list. Yes, I have one for me and one for the boys. Until next time, happy planning!

I remember having to come up with fresh ideas for summer activities too! Some great ones here for the teens love the metal detector, such a fun idea and a part-time job is a great one too! Thanks so much for sharing šŸ™‚

Thanks for stopping by. It does get harder as they get older. Then I find they want to be with their friends and that can be a blow to mom’s ego. LOL!

Great list of ideas…and not just for the teens šŸ™‚

    • Heather | 10th Jun 19

Thank you! Yes, we could all benefit from the list.

  3. Lina | 10th Jun 19

Great list! I could really use this for my little guys… well except for having them get a job šŸ™‚

    • Heather | 10th Jun 19

LOL! Well they could do chores. šŸ™‚

Love the idea of a list for teens especially to do safely while still having fun when there isn’t school!

    • Heather | 10th Jun 19

it is so important to keep them busy. Less room for trouble.

  5. Allyson | 10th Jun 19

Great ideas! šŸ™‚ looks like you’ll have a fun filled summer!!

    • Heather | 10th Jun 19

      We plan to šŸ™‚ Thanks!

It was so much easier when the kids were young and way cheaper. Iā€™m finding with my teens almost everything we do costs money. šŸ˜¬

  7. Debbie | 10th Jun 19

These are great. Things I can do with my grandson. I always wanted to get a metal detector and go hunting!

    • Heather | 10th Jun 19

It is so much fun. We love going to the beach with it.

  8. Jen | 10th Jun 19

Great list! I think it’s important for teens to get outside. I wonder though what happened to the idea of them getting a job? When I grew up it was considered lazy to not have a summer job.

    • Heather | 10th Jun 19

I think part of the issue is kids do so much more than we ever did as children. The sports are not just during the school year. There are camps. We travel with our kids, so it is hard for them to get a job and ask for time off. However this year it is different, so we will be home. I had a job since I was 14. I loved it, but ready to retire now at 47. LOL!!

  9. Suzanne | 10th Jun 19

Great ideas! My kids are almost the same ages! I just got them season passes for our local amusement park. I think it pays for itself in three visits, so I’m hoping to take them there a few times this Summer. The beach is an awesome idea too!

    • Heather | 10th Jun 19

Enjoy your time with them. It goes by so fast, doesn’t it?

  10. Laura Lee | 10th Jun 19

My kids are all grown and out of the house – with three of them living in other states. We’re visiting one of my daughters, her husband, and our grandchildren in Kentucky before they get stationed in TX. We plan on hitting the Ark Experience while we’re there. Definitely a bucket list item for me and will be so very educational, too.

  11. Stacey | 10th Jun 19

This list just screams “summer!” I love it! I’d never really thought about doing an outdoors movie night myself, but that sounds really fun.

  12. Kymberly Irwin | 10th Jun 19

Awesome list of ideas!! One of the things I did with my teen was try every snowball stand in the area. We hit every one of them during the summer … and we would go back to our favorites. We also love going to the drive-in!!

    • Heather | 10th Jun 19

      What is a snowball stand?

  13. Laura Balberchak | 10th Jun 19

Great list! I’m going to show it to my teen <3

    • Heather | 10th Jun 19

Yay! Let me know what they thing.

  14. Shirley | 10th Jun 19

Great ideas!!! My kids are long past the teen years but these ideas are still great and apply to other age groups too.

  15. Angela | 10th Jun 19

These work for my younger kids too! Chores, too – yes! Anything to get them active & off electronics

    • Heather | 10th Jun 19

Yes, the list could be for both šŸ™‚

  16. Meagan | 10th Jun 19

What great ideas! The summer is such a great opportunity to get to try new things!

  17. Lisa Manderino | 10th Jun 19

It is totally harder to plan for teens, this is a great list!

    • Heather | 10th Jun 19

Absolutely. They are certainly harder to keep entertained.

  18. Katie | 10th Jun 19

Those are some creative ideas for the summer! What a great idea to check out different ice cream shops! Yum! Have a great summer!

  19. Katie | 10th Jun 19

  20. Brittany | 10th Jun 19

Seems like the perfect list for teenagers and teens at heart! I love a great amusement park!!

    • Heather | 10th Jun 19

Yes, that is one of their favorites. That and the ice cream!

  21. Kendra | 10th Jun 19

Great ideas! I have one more teen at home, so always great to get more ideas to get him away from the video games. šŸ™‚

    • Heather | 10th Jun 19

Ugh the damn video games. They drive me nuts!

  22. Catherine McGuinness | 10th Jun 19

I love being a ‘tourist’ in my own city. There are always so many things that you intend to do or see but never get round to!

  23. Leigh Ann Newman | 10th Jun 19

All of these are great ideas, but the one that speaks to me the most is the drive-in movie. They are getting harder and harder to find, but we still have one within an hour’s drive and I love the nostalgia of the whole experience. I think my teenage son would too!

    • Heather | 11th Jun 19

      The drive-in is the best!

  24. Karla | 10th Jun 19

Can I come along? Sound like a fun summer. We are working on ours, too, but have an age range from 15 to 4 years old, so it’ll be interesting. The teens actually tell me that they like to do the little kid things again… once in a while.

    • Heather | 11th Jun 19

That is quite the range! My boys still like to do little kid things every once a while. I have a 9-month-old nephew, that they adore, so I am sure we will be tagging along doing things with his family.

  25. Christin Furnival | Real Life Mama | 10th Jun 19

Love your list! I just made my summer activities list for myself and my two young children. Fun to imagine what our Summers will look like as they get older! Have a great Summer šŸ™‚

    • Heather | 11th Jun 19

Thank you! I hope you do as well.

  26. Annette Durbin | 11th Jun 19

LOVE your list!!! Where do they have drive-in movies??? I miss those movie nights.

    • Heather | 11th Jun 19

We have one about 30 minutes away from me. I live in Mass. It is great. It has a wonderful snack shack, a beer garden with a fire pit and always have themed nights. It is a lot of fun.

  27. Jill | 11th Jun 19

Oh, the summer lists we’ve made! I, too, have had a list for me and a list for my boys. Interestingly enough, I’ve keep many of “my” summer lists from years past — it always amazes me what I get done and don’t get done. I just love lists!

    • Heather | 11th Jun 19

A girl after my own heart. I love a good list too!

  28. Cindy | 11th Jun 19

Great list of ideas for teens! Iā€™m looking forward to seeing YOUR list. šŸ˜Š

    • Heather | 11th Jun 19

I am working on it now šŸ™‚

  29. Jen | 11th Jun 19

I love that your list involves kids getting outside and off their screen.

  30. Jen | 11th Jun 19

I love this list. And making kids get outside and off their their phones is invaluable.

  31. Shirley | 11th Jun 19

What a list! You are going to create some wonderful memories with your boys this summer, even if you only get half of them checked off. My favorite is s’mores on the fire pit. We put a fire pit in our yard when our boys were small and its was wonderful family time. We even all slept out by it a few times. Cant wait to hear about a few of your summer adventures.

    • Heather | 11th Jun 19

Thank you! I am looking forward to a really great summer.

  32. Junell DuBois | 11th Jun 19

Great list of ideas! Teens and the whole family can get in on the fun.

    • Heather | 11th Jun 19

Yes, sometimes this can be hard to do!

  33. Kyndall Bennett | 11th Jun 19

Stevenn took me to my first drive-in movie as a surprise date back in 2016. It was so much fun (and surprisingly a LOT cheaper than going to the actual theaters! We just have to remember to bring our own snacks next time because the snack area can get crowded with people trying to order and watch what’s happening at the same time! šŸ˜…

    • Heather | 11th Jun 19

We love the drive in. Ours has a great beer garden area with a fire pit. It is a neat place to see a movie.

  34. Amber | 11th Jun 19

I love doing the tourist thing in our Capitol city! Touring old historic buildings is my FAV!

    • Heather | 27th Jun 19

Yes, it is amazing what you can find in your own backyard.

  35. Eileen Thorsen | 19th Jun 19

This is such a great list of ideas! Love the creativity!
